Elizabeth Ferris Writer

Welcome.

I am a writer and writing teacher living in Richmond, Virginia. I am a founding editor of Life in 10 Minutes Press and the co-editor of the anthology Unspoken: Writers on Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth.

Currently, I teach writers of fiction and nonfiction at the Studio School at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and independently through my own online classes. As a teacher, I think my biggest strength is breaking down craft elements in a way that helps writers grasp and integrate them into their work. (Or at least this is what my students have told me!)

I have edited for Vanderbilt University Press and currently do developmental editing for an imprint of Southern Fried Karma. I am a 2021 graduate of the MFA program at the Queens University of Charlotte where I was a reader for Qu Literary Magazine. I’ve been a hotel maid in Northern Spain, a nanny in Darwin, Australia, and a tomato picker on a farm in South Australia.

As a writer, I tend to favor literary fiction centered on relationships between women. As a reader and teacher, my interests vary much more widely…and wildly.

Some of my current favorite books: Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward, The Chronology of Water by Lidia Yuknavitch, Kinder Than Solitude by Yiyun Li, Dispatches by Michael Herr, Sula by Toni Morrison, and A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin. My forever-favorite is Willa Cather, through whom I first learned to love books.
